Since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad, over 2.2 million Syrians have returned to their homeland. Many returnees face destroyed homes, high poverty rates, and limited infrastructure, with some forced to live among ruins due to the high cost of rebuilding. The new government has prioritized economic recovery and the return of displaced citizens, but progress has been slow, and living standards have not significantly improved.

Humanitarian challenges persist, with high rates of malnutrition and food insecurity affecting large segments of the population. The country is also experiencing its worst drought in decades, leading to severe wheat shortages. Despite some efforts to rebuild, including reopening bakeries in Aleppo, many Syrians continue to live in precarious conditions, and there are widespread calls for faster recovery efforts.

Millions of Syrians return home after Assad's fall

Since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad last December, Syria's new leadership has faced a heavy legacy of a prolonged war, destruction and deep-rooted sectarian tensions. Recent violence in the southern province of Sueda has unsettled the country, along with Israel's bombing the defense ministry in the heart of the capital. More than 2.2 million Syrians have returned home since the fall of Assad. Many arrive hopeful, but face the reality of destroyed homes and shattered infrastructure. People are coming back, but their homes are destroyed. Some of them are living in the ruins because rebuilding is too expensive. According to the World Bank, nearly 70% of Syrians are living in poverty. The government is working toward long-term self-resilience by developing a robust national economy. The overarching goal is to enable displaced Syrians to return home. It has been nearly nine months since the new government took office. Many believe that since then there has been no major economic recovery and no significant improvement in their living standards. The government is asking for more time, saying the devastation of the country caused by the war is immense. But people are running out of patience. In regions across Syria, rates of severe malnutrition among children and pregnant women have surged, threatening the lives of the most vulnerable. 50% of the population is food insecure, with 3 million people severely food insecure. We need to continue our emergency assistance, either in the form of cash vouchers or food boxes, but also begin to really scale up the rebuilding of Syria. Some people are working to rebuild their lives, but others are living in ruins and close to landmines. In my land, four mines exploded, killing my neighbor when he hit it with his tractor. To make things worse, Syria is facing its worst drought since 1979. It is short of wheat by 2.7 million tons, enough to feed about 16 million people for a year. In Aleppo, rebuilt bakeries are providing bread to communities, offering a lifeline for some Syrians. But from devastated cities to farm fields marked by danger, the road ahead for Syria remains uncertain, with millions calling on the government to speed up recovery efforts.
