Mexico is looking for footwear giant Adidas to pony up after a Mexican-American designer, Willy Chavarria, working with the firm launched a shoe inspired by a traditional Indigenous sandal, authorities said.

Critics, including artisans from Oaxaca's Yalalac village, allege that the design was used without permission or proper credit, harming their cultural heritage and livelihood. 

The Mexican government has intervened, with President Claudia Sheinbaum pledging to protect Indigenous communities from cultural exploitation and reviewing legal options for support. Adidas is reportedly in discussions with local officials regarding restitution, while Chavarria has expressed regret for not partnering directly with the Oaxacan community. The incident follows previous cases where Mexico has challenged global brands to respect its traditional designs.

Adidas has found itself in a cultural appropriation controversy in Mexico after it launched a new line of sandals. Mexican-American designer Willy Chavarria collaborated with Adidas on the Oaxaca slip-on, inspired by indigenous Wurachi sandals. However, Mexican critics point out the sandals make use of the name of the southern Mexican state and the indigenous design while being made in China without crediting indigenous artisans. This has led to accusations of plagiarism and exploitation. Artisans in Oaxaca's Yalalac village say Adidas used their design without permission, harming their heritage and livelihood. Fidal Aquino is among them. A designer, I think, should have their own designs to work with and not plagiarize something that has been our livelihood and source of income and work for most of the community. The Mexican government stepped in on Friday to mediate the claims against Adidas. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed to protect indigenous communities from cultural exploitation. We are reviewing the legal aspects to support the communities. Often, large companies take products, ideas, designs from indigenous communities in our country. In fact, we are working on a law to ensure besides what already exists. In some ways, they are usurping the creativity of an indigenous community. She also added that Adidas is discussing restitution with Oaxaca officials and the Ministry of Culture under Mexico's cultural heritage law. Adidas did not respond to a request for comment. Chavarria, the shoe's designer, said in a statement on Saturday that he was deeply sorry that the shoe was appropriated in this design and not developed in direct and meaningful partnership with the Oaxacan community. He said his approach lacked respect for the community and that he intended to honor the powerful cultural and artistic spirit of Oaxaca and its creative communities. In the United States, Chavarria is praised for highlighting Latino issues and drew attention with a collection referencing El Salvador's Sea God prison. Mexico has previously challenged brands like Inditex and Louis Vuitton to protect its traditional designs.
