Maui is marking two years since the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history that destroyed the historic town of Lahaina. But the fire left behind not only physical scars in the burnt landscape, but mental wounds as well.

Lahaina, Hawaii, is still grappling with the aftermath of the 2023 wildfires, which claimed at least 102 lives and destroyed much of the community. The rebuilding process has been slow, with only a small number of homes restored, leaving many residents in temporary housing. Mental health issues remain widespread, with a recent study indicating that up to half of wildfire victims show symptoms of depression. Children are among the most vulnerable, with reports of suicidal ideation even among the young. While those who seek help often improve, ongoing support is at risk as funding for mental health research and services is set to expire, raising concerns about the community's long-term recovery.

Oh my God, this is a nightmare. It's an ongoing nightmare for many in Lahaina two years on from the deadliest wildfire in modern US history in 2023. At least 102 people were killed when high winds caused a series of wildfires to rip through the island of Maui. Residents dove into the water for safety. People abandoned their cars as they raced to evacuate. Bodies were buried under the rubble as home after home fell. Today, the rebuild effort has been slower than expected. Since the fire, only 50 homes have been rebuilt. That's just a fraction of all that has been erased from the map. In addition to the physical scars caused by the flames are the invisible ones. We closed the door. Ask him like hey, how are you doing? Half just break into tears. Doctor Christopher Knightsbridge is a mental health specialist at a behavioral health clinic in Lahaina. He's been studying the long term effects of the fires. What is Lahaina doing today? In my opinion, it's still in a state of crisis. There's like a severe mental health crisis going on. A recently published study, Knightsbridge help research revealed as many as half of Maui wildfire victims screened positive for symptoms of depression. One possible factor, housing insecurity. The fires displaced 90% of Lahaina residents and 40% still remain in temporary housing. In many cases, people are back to square one. Yes, but it's not just the square one, yes, but arguably worse. Because in square one we had the attention of the nation. You know the nation's eyes were on Lahaina year two people kind of forget about it and move on among the most vulnerable children. I got kids that are like 10 years old with suicidal ideation. You know that that's not supposed to happen. The good news, Knightsbridge says, is that those who do seek help will get better, but that support is now in jeopardy as funding for his ongoing five year study is on track to run out in October. It would be a completely unnecessary tragedy if we lose one more person to this fire. The stakes on the road to recovery are now higher than ever. Jonathan Vigliotti, CBS News, Lahaina.
