A group of masked, machete-wielding thugs is on the run in Melbourne after a fight broke out at a popular shopping centre. Terrified workers and shoppers were forced to hide, locking themselves in stores as two rival gangs attacked each other.

A violent incident occurred at Broadmeadows Central shopping centre in Melbourne, where masked individuals armed with machetes engaged in a confrontation, causing panic among workers and shoppers. The rival groups fled the scene before police arrived, escaping in two vehicles. 

The shopping centre has experienced previous violent incidents, prompting management to issue a statement condemning criminal behaviour and announcing increased security measures. However, some witnesses report no noticeable changes in security presence. The incident has also drawn attention to the Victorian government's $13 million initiative to install machete disposal bins across the state, with some questioning the effectiveness of these measures.

Melbourne shopping centre rocked by machete fight

Another day, another machete attack in Melbourne. Workers and shoppers at Broadmeadows Central cowered as masked men armed with machetes caused havoc at about 7.30 last night. We seen the two kids just out of nowhere, they started arguing and then, bang, they just pulled out the machetes. And we go outside, we look and we see about three people from the angle in front of the food court with machetes swinging at each other and whatnot. And you just see customers running, people distraught, yelling, kids crying. Workers watched on in horror, locking themselves inside their stores as the conflict made its way through the shopping centre. No, I actually can't. The armed individuals made their way out of the mall, followed closely by security. The two rival groups fled the scene in a silver Honda and white Mazda before police arrived. Just idiots. What are you fighting over? Nothing. It's pretty stupid, pretty silly. It's not the first time a serious incident has happened at the shopping centre. First it started off as a fight, then to a shooting right across the street. There was a fire there the other day. There was another machete fight in the car park just here, I think. Broadmeadows Central posted a statement online saying it does not tolerate criminal or antisocial behaviour and it understands how stressful the situation has been with the shopping centre open again today with increased security. They said there's going to be upgraded security, but we're not seeing anything. Look, we're not seeing any change. We've seen the same thing as we would on a normal day. Less than 500 metres from the shopping centre is this machete disposal bin, which is one of 45 located across the state in the government's attempts to crack down on knife crime. The bins, the total cost that the government's put out has cost them $13 million, and they're saying it's including advertising and promotion to say that they're patting themselves on the back for delivering something that's just simply not working.
