The father, James, was unable to open the bedroom door and broke through a window to save his sons, sustaining serious cuts and burns in the process. One son, Zane, is also in serious condition, while the mother and another son suffered burns but are stable. The family's three-year-old daughter was unharmed. A fundraising campaign has been launched to support the family during this period.

Ursula, at this stage the 32-year-old father of three is still in a critical condition at the Alfred Hospital after his heroic efforts to save his children. The fire started about 9.30 last night at their home in Hillside after an oil heater exploded in the children's bedroom. The dad, named James, tried to enter the room but the door wouldn't open so he ran outside and smashed through the bedroom window to rescue his two sons. He sustained serious cuts and burns to his back as a result of his efforts. His seven-year-old son, Zane, also sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Mother Rochelle and son Isaiah also sustained burns but are stable, with the three-year-old daughter unscathed.
