A report from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights reveals that intersex people in Europe continue to face significant challenges, with around two in five subjected to conversion practices aimed at changing their sexual orientation or gender identity. This rate is higher than that experienced by the broader LGBTIQ community. The prevalence of these practices is particularly high in Sweden, Germany, and Poland, while Belgium and Romania report the lowest rates.

The report also highlights that verbal humiliation, family pressure, and physical violence are common forms of abuse. Genital mutilation, or sex normalizing surgeries, remains a major issue, with more than half of respondents and their parents not fully informed before undergoing such procedures. The highest rates of these treatments are reported in the Netherlands, France, and Germany, while the lowest are in Romania, Czechia, and Italy.

Where in Europe do intersex people face the most problems? Intersex is an umbrella term for people with biological characteristics that do not fit typical male or female patterns or have traits of both. The latest report from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights found that around 2 in 5 intersex people in Europe were forced to undergo convergent practices to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, compared with 1 in 4 among those in all LGBTIQ communities. In Sweden, Germany and Poland, more than half of intersex respondents underwent convergent practices. This figure was lowest in Belgium and Romania. Verbal humiliation tops the list of abuse, followed by family pressure and physical violence. The report highlights a major issue for intersex people, namely genital mutilation, also referred to as sex normalizing surgeries. More than half of respondents and their parents were not fully informed before undergoing these medical procedures. A quarter of respondents underwent such treatments between the ages of 18 and 24. 10% experienced genital mutilation at birth or under one year old. The highest reported rates of such treatments are in the Netherlands, France and Germany, while the lowest rates are in Romania, Czechia and Italy.
