A man known to police has sustained severe burns after allegedly setting fire to a car in Blacktown. Emergency services responded quickly, and the man later presented himself at hospital. Police are investigating.

A Hyundai i30 was found ablaze on Boyd Street in Blacktown, with the driver, who is known to police, believed to have set the vehicle on fire. Witnesses reported seeing the man, suffering from significant burns, seeking help from nearby residents and expressing distress over his injuries. Emergency services arrived promptly, but the man had left the scene before their arrival. He later presented himself at Blacktown Hospital with severe burns to his legs and hands. Police have since questioned the man, who is cooperating to some extent, but the motive for the incident remains unclear.

Glowing in the middle of Boyd Street, a Hyundai i30 up in flames. The driver, well known to police, believed to have torched the hatchback and accidentally in the act himself. We saw this dude like trying to kind of remove his pants because he was pretty badly burnt. He was kept repeating, I'm going to die, I'm going to die. Or like, you know, my skin is burning, my skin's falling off. His path easily traceable for forensics after ditching the car keys in the closest gutter. The burns to his legs and hands left a bloody trail as he knocked on nearby doors, peered in front rooms and through car windows screaming for help. He was walking around a bit like freaked out. There is a car burning and guy screaming and then we literally thought like he was inside the car. And I called up ambulance, triple zero, fire brigade and I saw within three minutes they were here but the guy who was in the car, he just vanished. A short time later, a 31-year-old man self-presented here at Blacktown hospital with what's been described as severe burns. It's understood police then attended and have questioned the patient. And while he's somewhat cooperating with police, the only piece of the puzzle left unanswered is why. Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
