In response to the crisis, President Radjoulina dissolved his government and appointed Army General Rufin Zevi Sambu as prime minister, but protest leaders have rejected dialogue and continue to demand the president's resignation.

But the youth-led movement Gen Z, Mada, has rejected any dialogue demanding Radjoulina's resignation. With soldiers now siding with protesters and fears of another military split is growing, many people in the country fear history could be repeating itself.

A ceasefire is in effect between Hamas and Israel after just over two years of war. An exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinians held prisoner is set to take place in the coming days, and U.S President Donald Trump is set to visit the region on Monday.
