French President Emmanuel Macron visited Marseille to address growing concerns over drug trafficking and public safety, following the recent murder of Mehdi Kessassi. During his visit, Macron also discussed the importance of regulating social media for minors and reviewed progress on his 2021 Marseille plan, which pledged significant investments in the city's infrastructure and services.

Despite the commitment of 5 billion euros to improve schools, public transport, and policing, only 23% of the funds have been allocated so far. Residents and police unions continue to express concerns about staff shortages and the need for further investment to address security and social challenges in Marseille.

Macron seeks international cooperation to tackle drug trafficking

Emmanuel Macron's first stop on his visit to Marseille, a discussion on democracy in the age of social media. The French president is mulling a similar ban to Australia's for under-16s. Social networks bring us many good things, exchanging knowledge, etc., but also things which we need to regain control over. His next priority is drug trafficking. The government has promised to clamp down on it, following the murder last month of young Mehdi Kessassi, the brother of Amine, an anti-drug activist. The killing shocked the city and struck a chord in the rest of France, which has also seen a gradual increase in drug-related crime. If there were more police officers on the streets, there would be far fewer abuses and people would feel safer. The people of Marseille are fed up with seeing their own being killed. Macron is also visiting a brand new police station in an impoverished part of the city. It's home to around 100 police officers, but unions say this isn't enough. There's a real shortage of staff and resources to do the job, and we're waiting for him finally to ensure the safety of the population with a police force that is itself safe. Macron's plan for Marseille, launched with great fanfare in 2021, was supposed to help France's second city to catch up. But residents say it's not just security that needs investment. The lack of staff in schools, as in hospitals where I work, is glaring. We have seen that they have indeed carried out work in some schools, but there is still a lot more to be done in all Marseille's schools. I hope more resources are provided. Marseille is simply poor. The Marseille plan committed 5 billion euros of investments in substandard schools, public transport and the police. So far, 23% of the funds have been allocated.
