Political concerns, including fears of opening investigations into past crimes and avoiding international friction, have hindered efforts to grant the International Criminal Court jurisdiction. Families and survivors remain persistent in their pursuit of justice.

Abir Abdullah hasn't stopped demanding accountability for her brother Aysam, one of 12 Lebanese journalists killed in separate Israeli strikes during the conflict with Hezbollah. Two years on, their families and survivors are demanding officials take action to prosecute Israel for the killings. I don't think we're any closer to getting justice than we were two years ago. More than four or five reports have been put out, investigations proving that we were targeted twice. Dylan was among a group of journalists covering hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah along the Lebanon-Israel border when they were hit by two Israeli shells. Independent investigations and UN experts said it was a premeditated and targeted attack by Israel. A video, taken moments before, showed identifiable reporters who were away from the fighting. It was filmed by Aysam. And it's terrifying, this level of impunity. We were the first group of journalists that were targeted by the Israeli military after October 7th. And we've seen what happens since then, again and again and again, the same kind of targeted attack. There have been several attacks on Lebanese journalists since Aysam was killed. In one incident, a compound housing media workers in southern Lebanon was hit, killing and wounding journalists as they slept. What we experienced, it was like a horror movie. This is so dangerous if no one, no one says stop, and if there is no accountability. There have been no legal proceedings, no international inquiry. Lebanon should seriously reconsider granting the International Criminal Court with jurisdiction to investigate war crimes on Lebanon's territories after October 2023. Last year, the previous government agreed to do this before it backtracked without giving a reason. In Lebanon, politics is at play. Powerful officials fear a referral could open investigations and prosecutions into past crimes in a country with a judiciary paralyzed by political interference. There's also the issue of avoiding international friction. The United States has sanctioned the ICC for investigating potential Israeli war crimes in Gaza. Families and those who survived know this, but it hasn't stopped their quest for justice. Zainab Khader Al-Jazeera, Beirut.
