The key accuser in former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s alleged illegal campaign financing from the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi died on Tuesday, just two days before the verdict, his lawyer said.

Ziad Takyeddin, a Franco-Lebanese businessman and the main accuser in the case against former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, has died of a heart attack in a Beirut hospital. Takyeddin was known for his allegations that Sarkozy's 2007 presidential campaign was illegally financed with funds from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, claims that have been central to the ongoing trial.

Takyeddin's accusations included claims of delivering suitcases filled with millions of euros to Sarkozy's chief of staff, though his credibility was questioned due to past convictions and a history of recanting and reaffirming his statements. His death comes just before a verdict was expected in the case, which remains under judicial investigation.

His accusations are at the very heart of the trial, with a verdict expected this Thursday. Takyeddin had sensationally claimed in 2016 that suitcases filled with millions of euros had been delivered to Sarkozy's chief of staff, Claude Guéant, a man who has since branded him a great manipulator. Aren't you ashamed to give a platform to a man who's been to prison, who's been convicted numerous times for defamation and who's a liar? That's not my idea of public service. It's a disgrace. The case took a turn in 2020 when Takyeddin recanted his accusations, only to backtrack shortly after. Judges saw the flip-flop as a possible case of witness tampering, placing Nicolas Sarkozy under investigation once more in a case that is still ongoing.
