A week after his death, Utah Republican lawmakers are pushing for a Charlie Kirk memorial to be erected on the campus of Utah Valley.

An online fundraiser for the memorial has raised nearly $70,000, with Senator McKay stating that the effort is intended to honor Kirk's commitment to free speech. University officials have expressed their commitment to creating a safe environment and are collaborating with students and the community to develop a suitable long-term memorial plan.

State Senator Dan McKay is leading this effort along with a couple of other members of the legislature. So we wanted to come down to campus today and talk with the university and students about their thoughts on this idea. I think it would only be right to have a memorial here where he was assassinated. Students I talked with say they continue to feel the aftermath of that day. Everywhere you go around the campus it's just not going to be the same because everyone's just going to start thinking about the tragedy that happened. So many of them felt this would be a good way to remember that loss. Senator McKay's online fundraiser has collected nearly $70,000 as of Tuesday. In a statement to Fox 13 News, he said he launched it to honor Kirk's fierce dedication to free speech. While it's something they wish wasn't attached to this school, freshman Taylor Briones tells me it could serve as an important symbol to reflect on. There's always going to be reminders of things that were tough, but we need to remember those tough times because if we brush off history then nothing is ever going to change. Now UVU officials are of course readying themselves for the return to classes tomorrow, but they did send us a statement on this matter which reads, Our immediate focus and ongoing work is to develop a safe learning environment for our students, faculty and staff.
