It's match day in western Kenya's Kakamega County, the local centre of bullfighting. Two bulls will be facing off in a dusty arena as thousands cheer. Today's match is a do-over between relative newcomer Shakahola and long-time favourite Promise. At first we fought with a bull named Promise and the match didn't go well. I was cheated out of victory, so I bound to get a rematch. Sociologist Catalina Nangwe says bullfighting is a deeply rooted tradition among the Lukia community in Kakamega County. It started as entertainment after the harvest and has evolved into a sport that attracts thousands of young people. It's even the focus of betting on social media. In the case of bullfighting, an interesting sport that is found in western Kenya, mostly held after harvest, to celebrate the harvest. And so society came together, giving thanks but enjoying at the same time. So what would happen is two bulls from two different groups would come and would want to see, or they would want to see, what the strengths of the bull are. There was a winner and not necessarily a loser, because what happened is the loser would say next time I will get you. That kept the spirit of society going. As well as creating a sense of community, bullfighting also contributes to the economy, in an area with about 9% unemployment. The youth are interested in identity, who am I? And authenticity, who am I, what do I stand for? Now the bullfighting gives that opportunity, that this is ours, those of us who come from that part of the country, this is what we do when we are here and this is who we are. Hours before the match, the bulls are pampered to help them get ready to do battle. But win or lose, for Kakamega County, it's the taking part that counts.
