A jury has convicted five men of first-degree murder in the death of a four-year-old girl. Kylie Jones reports.

A jury has found five men guilty in the murder of four-year-old Suni Bell, who was killed during a shooting in Tampa in 2021. The men, Zavante Samson, Jalen Bedward, James Denson, Andrew Thompson, and Quandarious Hammond, were tried together and convicted on all charges after a trial lasting more than a week.

The defendants were accused of ambushing a car carrying Suni, her mother, and her uncle, and firing dozens of bullets, resulting in Suni's death. The jury deliberated extensively, considering evidence such as cell phone data, bullet casings, and testimony from family members. Despite defense arguments that the evidence was circumstantial, the jury returned guilty verdicts for each man, who now face mandatory life sentences.

FOX 13's Kylie Jones is in our newsroom tonight with the new details as this trial comes to an end. Kylie This was not an easy verdict to come to, huh? No, it wasn't. And this has been really long awaited, especially by the family of four year old Sonny Bell, who was found guilty of killing a four year old girl in Tampa tried them together. Jurors had to reach a verdict for each of the five men. Individually the trial for Zavante Samson, Jalen Bedward, James Denson, Andrew Thompson and Quandarious Hammond lasted more than a week. The men were accused of ambushing the car that four year old Sonny was riding in with her mother and uncle on Hillsborough Avenue in 2021. They sprayed dozens of bullets at the car, killing Sonny in the process. The jury deliberated. The jury deliberated. The jury deliberated on the shooting, cell phone data, bullet casings and testimony from Sonny's mother and uncle. Defense teams for each of the five continuously called a lot of the state's evidence circumstantial. The defense collectively argued there was no evidence proving who was responsible for Sonny's death. The jury deliberated all day yesterday and most of today. But this morning they had three people charged with first degree murder. If 11 people say first degree murder and one person says second degree murder. Does that mean they get charged with second degree murder? Question two. If half the people are saying guilty on one count. The other half are saying not guilty. Does that make that a mistrial? Does this cause a mistrial for the entire case or specific charge in which we disagree? He was instructed to evaluate each charge for each defendant separately. Each of the men faced several charges in addition to the murder of Sonny. Finally the jury came back around 3 45 this afternoon with guilty verdicts on every charge for each of those five men. Now the jury is back in session. The judge has ordered the family to carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Certainly some closure. For that family.
