The ruling affects approximately 600,000 Venezuelans and 350,000 Haitians, requiring the Department of Homeland Security to restore legal status and work permits for some migrants who had already lost their protections and faced deportation.

The judge cited the dangerous conditions in the migrants' home countries as a key factor in the decision. The Department of Homeland Security has argued that the TPS program has been overextended and misused, and the Justice Department is expected to appeal the ruling. In related developments, authorities detained 475 immigrants in a large-scale operation at a Hyundai plant in Georgia, and immigration enforcement activities are ongoing in Chicago.

Now to the president's immigration crackdown. A federal judge has blocked the administration from ending temporary protected status for nearly a million migrants from Haiti and Venezuela. Our immigration reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez is here, as always, to help us understand it. First, on the judge's ruling, what was the ruling? Sure, John, so a federal judge in California has ruled against the Trump administration's efforts to scale back the temporary protected status, a humanitarian protection program on immigration for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan migrants and also migrants from Haiti. It covers about 600,000 Venezuelans and 350,000 Haitians, a very large population, the biggest of any TPS program. The order requires the Department of Homeland Security to restore the legal status and work permits of some Venezuelan migrants who had already lost their status and had become eligible for deportation. The judge said the Trump administration, John, is trying to send these migrants, quote, back to conditions that are so dangerous that even the State Department advises against travel to their home countries, a scathing order. The Justice Department will almost certainly appeal. The Department of Homeland Security argues this program has been exploited, abused, and extended for far too long. Tell us what we should know about this raid in Georgia of the Hyundai plant. Well, officials say that 475 immigrants suspected of working and living here in the U.S. illegally were detained during this operation, which authorities say is the largest single-site operation in the history of Homeland Security investigations, a branch of DHS that handles immigration-related crimes, including labor trafficking. Most of the detainees, we are told by officials, are Korean nationals. They are now facing deportation. The operation, importantly, John, involved agents from Border Patrol, ICE, the ATF, to DEA, DEA, rather, the FBI, and also Georgia State Troopers. That really underscores that the administration is looking at state officials and across the federal government to muster resources and manpower to assist its immigration crackdown. According to a Department of Homeland Security memo, right now, the Department of Homeland Security is using a naval station to stage immigration enforcement operations in the Chicago area. We are told it could start as soon as this weekend.
