It is a rare honour for the Jewish dead to be farewelled with the coffin inside the synagogue, but Rabbi Schlanger was remembered today as a tower to his family, his community, and the whole Jewish world. One of the purest and most sincere and compassionate people any of us have known. A just 41, through hatred and murder, gone far too soon. This of course is just the first of 15 funerals that will play out in the coming days, each with its own sorrows. In this one, it is quite clear, grief is still competing with anger, and a brimming sense of outrage. I really feel the multicultural exercise as a fifth generation Australian has failed in the last 20 years. I believe the federal government is responsible for what happened. They have been warned multiple times by members of the community, leaders of the community, the Israeli government. We need to be understood and we need to be looked after and we need to be protected or we can't call this place home. Central to Jewish identity is both resilience and suffering. And both were in these faces. A funeral is now underway for a second rabbi killed on Sunday, Yaakov Levitan, not yet 40, a father of four. Hugh Rimington, 10 News.
