Italy has told Israel to respect the rights of Italian activists taking part in a flotilla that is seeking to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, after a boat was attacked with incendiary devices in Tunisian waters.

Israel's national security minister has suggested classifying flotilla members as security prisoners, potentially leading to their detention. Israel maintains that the blockade is necessary to prevent weapons smuggling, while flotilla participants emphasize their commitment to supporting Palestinians in Gaza.

They are on their way to try and break Israel's blockade of Gaza. The first boats of the global Sumid flotilla are en route to the enclave, carrying symbolic amounts of humanitarian aid and activists from around the world. More boats are expected to depart from Tunisia as the voyage has so far experienced setbacks. There were reports of suspected drone attacks on the boats in a Tunisian port. Researchers described these as deliberate attempts by Israel to disrupt the mission. The Israeli military did not comment. Rana Hamida, a Palestinian commanding one of the vessels, said the events do not deter her. We're not scared. The purpose, just remember, the purpose of attacks like this is to deflate the energy of the people and to distract people and to shake them. And what it actually does is that it brings people together. Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Givir, wants to classify the flotilla members as security prisoners. This could see them spend weeks in Israeli detention. Any risk we could be subjected to is, of course, nothing to what Palestinians are risking every day, just trying to survive. For example, the extremely brave Palestinian journalists who we are all in debt for, for them reporting about what is happening on the ground, they risk their lives every single day to tell the story. Israel says the flotillas are publicity stunts and that a blockade is necessary to prevent weapons from being smuggled into Gaza.
