The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the mission involving nine vessels, maintains that their actions are peaceful and dispute Israel's authority in international waters. The interception occurred approximately 120 nautical miles off Gaza's coast, with no injuries reported. The event follows earlier protests and a general strike in Italy after a previous flotilla was stopped. Some activists have alleged mistreatment during detention, a claim denied by Israeli authorities.

Israel has offered all detained activists voluntary deportation. Some have alleged mistreatment, a claim Israel calls a brazen lie.
