China is closely following Donald Trump's Venezuela campaign. Beijing has been a vocal supporter of the oil-rich nation, but geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China mean it's now taking a more cautious approach.

China has maintained a close relationship with Venezuela since the era of Hugo Chavez, primarily to expand its influence in the Americas and secure access to Venezuela's significant oil reserves. Despite describing the relationship as a strategic partnership and providing vocal support to President Maduro, recent U.S. actions—including threats of military intervention and sanctions—have complicated these ties.

While China continues to import large volumes of Venezuelan oil, often circumventing sanctions by relabeling shipments, experts note that Beijing is unlikely to increase its support through arms sales, new investments, or loans. As geopolitical tensions between China and the United States escalate, Venezuela may have to rely mainly on moral support from Beijing rather than substantial new assistance.

Is China abandoning ally Venezuela amid tensions with U.S.?

Since the era of authoritarian leader Chavez, Venezuela has been China's major relationship in the Americas. The friendship has helped China expand its presence in a region the U.S. considers its backyard and gain access to the world's largest oil reserves. China hails their ties as an all-weather strategic partnership, and Beijing has been vocal in supporting the government of President Maduro. Chinese President Xi Jinping even gave Maduro a cell phone. It's impressive. I can find out everything through this. The phone that Xi Jinping gave me. Look, Xi Jinping gave me this Huawei. It's the best phone in the world, and the Americans can't hack it, neither their spy planes nor their satellites. But U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of military action, its seizure of a Venezuelan oil tanker, and the obliteration of alleged Venezuelan drug boats by U.S. drones means China's carefully developed ties to Venezuela could now be in jeopardy. China loves Venezuelan oil. In 2024, Venezuela sent 351,000 barrels per day of oil to China. Volumes increased to 463,000 barrels per day in the first four months of this year. Washington has blocked all crude exports to the USA since 2019 to choke off funding for Maduro. In March, the U.S. threatened tariffs on any country importing Venezuelan oil. Traders report that China is still managing to get around sanctions by declaring Venezuelan oil as Malaysian. But Beijing seems to be wary of crossing any other lines. I find it highly unlikely that China would do anything of the sort of more, let's say, proactive support for Maduro, selling arms or, you know, new investments, large investment, new loans. I don't see any of the sorts happening. Not now and not in the near future. As geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China worsen, Venezuela may have to be content with moral support.
