Volunteers, supported by the country's navy, have been working to clear the weed, but their efforts have so far only covered a small portion of the affected area.

Environmentalists attribute the rapid spread of water lettuce to pollutants entering the lake, suggesting that addressing pollution is key to a long-term solution. However, concerns remain that the cleanup may not be fast enough to prevent lasting economic damage to the region.

The waters of Lake Suchetland are normally a sparkling blue. But an invasive green weed known as water lettuce is driving tourists away. People from across the South American country usually love to take boat trips, go fishing and enjoy the waterside restaurants. Now the only visitors are volunteers fighting a battle to clear the wetlands waters of the bright, green aquatic plant. Since late July, around 600 people have cleaned up an area the size of nine soccer pitches. Weighing in at just over a ton, that's a tiny portion of the thick green carpet covering the reservoir. Troops from the country's navy, the Marina Nacional, have brought in dredging barges and heavy equipment to speed things up. It's a battle against time. Environmentalists say the voracious weeds feed off chemical and heavy metal pollutants that flow into the lake. Tackling that is the only long-term solution to eradicating the fast-growing pests, they say. But that could come too late to save the local economy. I think the cleanup work they're doing is important, but I think they should have acted more quickly. The environment ministry should have been monitoring the growth of this infamous water lettuce. Well, it has affected us because the truth is that we have eight restaurant areas and we have to pay all the waiters and waitresses. If tourists don't come, where are we going to make money? That's a question haunting the waterside communities. At the current rate of cleanup, it could take a decade to return Lake Suchitlan to its former glory.
