We went to the city in northern Peru because of a simple phrase, spoken on a balcony in the Vatican by the first American pope. In a particular way, my dear God, this is Chiclayo in Peru. And on that Sunday in early May when Cardinal Prevost ascended to the throne of St. Peter, the town was lifted as well, becoming an instant tourist attraction. The fact that recently a new pope has been elected from here just makes everything more special. City officials told us the election of Pope Leo touched off a pilgrimage here by Catholics from all over the world, and that is a blessing for the economy. Tourism could give this city a $40 million boost. Restaurants, hotels, and tour companies are scrambling to meet demand. Are you worried? No, I am so happy.
