Measures such as additional police officers, private security, and community patrols have been implemented at events like Hanukkah celebrations, and similar precautions are being planned for upcoming Christmas and New Year's gatherings.

Security experts highlight that protecting such events requires months of preparation, including threat assessment, monitoring of social media, and physical site surveys. The approach involves layered security zones and close cooperation with law enforcement agencies, with officials advising attendees to remain calm and aware in the event of an incident.

Increased security for large-scale holiday events

Several other Hanukkah celebrations added some security in the aftermath of the attacks. With Christmas and New Year's on the way, security of course will be top of mind for many people hoping to celebrate at festivals or parties. ABC 10 News reporter Adam Campos joining us right now with a breakdown of what it takes to protect these large events. Adam. Yeah, Jared and Mel, anytime you go to any large event, you know security is really at the top of mind a lot of times. And sadly for the Jewish community, extra security at synagogues or community centers has become commonplace. But after the attack in Australia, many leaders are adding to their detail that they already have added. Rabbi Greenberg from Chabad in Oceanside told me extra police officers were on scene last night during their Hanukkah celebration. They also had private security and members of their center actually patrolling the grounds. And Greenberg told me nothing was going to stop them from celebrating. We have to realize what's going on in the world and answer to it. But at the same time, we will continue. We're not going to give in to evil. We will go ahead and bring more light into this world. With Christmas and New Year's coming, we'll see more large crowds gathering to celebrate. And I spoke to Michael Julian, who's worked large-scale private security for more than 30 years. And he explains it takes months of prep work to nail down looking at any potential threat levels towards the event, meaning if it's tied to a certain group, monitoring social media, and actually surveying the physical location. We focus on what's called concentric circles or bubbles of security. The furthest out, how much control we have of the perimeter as far out as we can get, maybe the property line. Then if it's in a building or where everyone's going to be congregated, that area. So we have access control and eyes on people coming and going to that area. And Julian added collaboration with law enforcement on those bubbles is key. And if something were to happen at an event you're at, it's important to stay calm so you can make your next move.
