AccuWeather's lead hurricane expert Alex De Silva explained that Hurricane Imelda is being pulled eastward by Humberto, a phenomenon known as the Fujiwara effect. As Humberto moves north of Imelda, Imelda is expected to make a sharp turn to the right, with both storms heading toward Bermuda.

Despite the activity, no direct landfall in the United States is expected from either storm. The rest of the Atlantic basin is experiencing high wind shear, which is limiting the development of new storms. Other areas of interest, such as the Bay of Campeche and a tropical wave near Africa, are being monitored but currently pose no immediate threat to the US.

Imelda tugged east by Humberto's pull

Joining us right now is Accuweather lead hurricane expert Alex De Silva. And Alex, we talked about this on Friday, that there'd be a big tug of war going on. Well, I wouldn't say it's a tug of war. I think it's a landslide and Umberto is going to be winning that. And part of the reason is because the distance between the two is, what about, you were talking about 650 miles or so. Yeah, it certainly is. And, you know, the big question was going to be whether Umberto could outrun Umberto to the north. And that would be how we would get a U.S. landfall. The storm was a little bit slower. And so now we're going to really initiate the Fujiwara effect. Both players, both players are on the dance floor now and they're getting ready to do a little dance here starting tonight into tomorrow with Umberto to the east and Umberto to the west. They're going to start to rotate around one another, at least Umberto will. And then as Umberto moves to the north of Imelda, which it's starting to do now, then Imelda will be pulled underneath and from the southwest. And so that's why we're going to be seeing this hard right-hand turn coming over the next day or so. And then both storms will be heading out towards Bermuda. All right, let's take a look at the rest of Atlantic as, you know, September is the biggest month of the hurricane season, but we're going to go through this month without a landfalling storm in the United States. Yeah, very impressive. Of course, we will see some impacts from Imelda here, but not a direct direct landfall here. But, you know, looking across the basin, it does look pretty quiet other than our two systems off the southeast coast. But there are going to be a few things that we'll have to watch. But right now, look at the base and it's full of sheer. You can see all this dark purple. So nothing immediate going to be developing here over the next couple of days. But we are watching two areas, one way in the west, Bay of Campeche area. The good news for the United States is that if this develops, it's moving south. So it'll be heading towards Mexico, not towards the United States. And then the other area way out in the Atlantic, it's still that time of the year where we still have to watch the tropical waves. Usually we have to wait till about mid-October or so, maybe a little bit later for that to really slow down. So we're still looking out towards Africa and we have one at the beginning of October that we're going to have to watch.
