Illinois lawmakers are advocating for federal immigration agents to remove their masks, a move included in a bill challenging the Trump administration’s deportation efforts.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a bill that would prohibit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from wearing masks to conceal their identities during operations. The proposal, sponsored by Democratic Representative Barbara Hernandez, aims to address concerns from immigrant communities who report fear and confusion over masked arrests and lack of information about detainees’ whereabouts.

Opponents, including Republican Representative Patrick Sheehan, argue that masks are necessary to protect ICE agents from threats and harassment, citing a significant increase in assaults against officers. The bill may be discussed in the upcoming legislative session, and a similar measure is under consideration by the Chicago City Council.

This proposal is sponsored by Aurora Democratic Representative Barbara Hernandez, and it would unmask ice agents, AKA it would ban them from wearing masks over their faces to conceal their identities. And Hernandez says ISIS recent activities and their recent habit of masking up has put all immigrant communities, legal citizens or not, in fear. Communities are getting terrorized. A lot of people are not aware who's getting arrested or why they're getting arrested in many situations. Or by who? Mainly because they're wearing a mask. They're not identifying themselves. There's a lot of individuals that are just in panic. And I've seen it here in Aurora a lot. And I'm sure it's happening, I know, in Chicago too. But this bill alone will help clarify who is exactly arresting them, detaining them, and where are they taking them. And Hernandez says many family members have not been told where those in custody are going, and folks have simply disappeared. Now, Republicans, of course, oppose this bill. One state representative has proposed a counter resolution for local law enforcement to support ICE in their immigration efforts. Now, the Illinois Trust Act bans that kind of activity. Representative Sheehan, Patrick Sheehan of Homer Glen, says the masks are necessary, he believes, because there's been a dramatic uptick in threats against ICE agents. These ICE officers have been doxxed. They've been harassed at home. And the reason why we want to do this, we want to make sure that these officers are given all the resources to do their jobs. I mean, we've seen assaults against ICE agents up 830% due to the dangerous rhetoric on the left. This bill could be taken up when lawmakers return for their fall veto session.
