U.S. officials are warning that storm Beryl could regain strength and hit Texas as a category three hurricane. Beryl was downgraded to a tropical storm after hitting Mexico, leaving a trail of destruction and thousands without power.

In Tulum, residents, primarily low-income indigenous Mayans, are receiving food aid as they cope with the aftermath of the storm. Soldiers have been preparing meals for those affected, as the area remains without electricity, making it difficult for people to cook.

The damage in Tulum is significant, with power lines down and telecommunications impaired. Some homes, especially those of low-income residents like Hector and Rufina, were severely affected. The storm has intensified worries about the hurricane season, which usually peaks later in the year.

Despite these challenges, authorities had taken precautions which prevented human casualties, unlike the devastating impact of Hurricane Otis in Acapulco last year. As Beryl continues its path across the Yucatan Peninsula and potentially strengthens over the Gulf of Mexico, Texans are being urged to prepare.

Businesses in Tulum are slowly reopening, and tourists are beginning to venture out, optimistic that the worst of the storm is over for the region.

Hungry residents of Tulum, mainly low-income indigenous Mayans, wait patiently in line, while soldiers prepare a meal of fish stew, rice and beans. The only food most will have eaten since before Hurricane Beryl hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula at dawn on Friday. On Thursday night they cut off electricity, now there's no way to cook, and we're all hungry. Power lines are still down and telecommunications shoddy at best. The aftermath of the Category 2 storm is obvious to the eye. But for these families who live hand-to-mouth, having something in their stomachs is a good start on the road to recovery. The storm damaged some homes, especially those who can least afford it, like Hector and Rufina. Parts of their roof flew off, soaking everything inside, including their cardboard walls. The hurricane season starts now, but they've never come before September or October. And imagine if it's starting already, what can we expect? I'm worried. But unlike Hurricane Otis, which caused catastrophic damage and left at least 50 dead in Acapulco last October, this time authorities took precautions and there were no human casualties. At this point Hurricane Beryl has become a tropical storm as it makes its way to the other end of the Yucatan Peninsula. From there it will enter the Gulf of Mexico, where the warm waters could turn it again into a powerful hurricane before it makes landfall yet again in Mexico on Sunday. On the road to Tulum, businesses are slowly opening up. Tourists are starting to come out, relieved that in the Riviera Maya the worst is over, at least for now.
