Imelda still making impacts to East Coast despite moving into Atlantic

Meanwhile, Hurricane Imelda remains active as a Category 2 hurricane near Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour. The main impacts in Bermuda are expected to be wind-related, with potential for property damage and power outages, though the island's stone construction helps mitigate risks.

In the United States, coastal flooding warnings have been issued for areas in the northeast, including parts of Virginia and Maryland, as high tides coincide with the effects of the storms. The majority of fatalities in Bermuda from such storms have historically occurred at sea rather than on land. Both storms are moving away from the U.S., but residents in affected coastal areas are advised to remain cautious.

I didn't have the I didn't put the label for Umberto here because Umberto is no longer officially a tropical system We're calling it a tropical rain and wind storm, but it has certainly been absorbed by a trough But Imelda is still a legitimate hurricane right now. We're also watching for this next tropical wave to move west of Africa So again, we are tracking Imelda. Here is Bermuda It's closing in but it's a fairly compact storm. So the main cloud shield has yet to really even reach Bermuda It was racing east though at east northeast movement at 22 miles per hour max sustained winds a hundred miles per hour So it is a category 2 hurricane here It comes into Bermuda and it's gonna be racing through this region here between maybe 9 and midnight tonight local time The highest wind gusts in Bermuda 102 are accurate the local storm acts of 120 miles per hour So this will bring some significant impacts And I think if there was any other spot in the world facing a storm like this there would be huge problems But Bermuda has learned to build with stone There's some great stories on AccuWeather.com from Ari Scalise and others here who have talked about how again they do get hit They have a long history back to the 1700s They used to build out of wood and learn quickly 300 years ago that with the type of storm they faced in the 1700s 1800s and here we are today. You just can't do that. You got to build out of stone in Bermuda So there is a moderate risk to lives and property Anybody doing anything out there around the perimeter of the islands shouldn't be doing it They need to be over hard land there most of the fatalities the overwhelming majority of fatalities in Bermuda over the past century and tropical systems have been because of Boating and nothing on land. So the storm has an AccuWeather real impact scale rating of 2 which means potential for wind damage That's the main motivation here in other cases We might give the storm a rating of 2 because of coastal flooding in this case It's entirely wind damages or main concerns So there could be small buildings damaged tree damage their power outages for sure even in Bermuda with a storm like this then it goes out to sea so a lot of concerns there with the melt up and There is tropical wind and rainstorm Umberto, which even has a second name. It's the first of the series of Winter storms for the United Kingdom. So the Met office there calls this storm Amy Let's go to Anna now with look at what's going on off the east coast of the US Yeah, this is all related to Imelda and Umberto now Amy though We certainly are not referring to it that way in the northeast. We're still talking about Coastal flooding now, I know the focus has been in the southeast mostly But we are starting to see these impacts in a portion portions of the northeast as well I know Jeff mentioned the Chesapeake Bay and that's where the warnings are a lot of watches including even Philadelphia But we talked about those warnings. It's the Annapolis area and then Southern Virginia into the Williamsburg area These have different time frames as far as when the warnings expire the southern one goes out until 11 p.m And it all depends on when high tide moves in high tides this evening for somewhere like Williamsburg, but Annapolis It's not until just before 2 a.m. So that warning out until the early morning hours of Tomorrow morning because of the flooding concerns here and now both of these scenarios We do have concerns that streets could be flooded businesses could be impacted just because of how close to the coast some things are
