Human Rights Watch has demanded the release of Niger's former president Mohamed Bazoum, who has been held in detention by the country's military junta since the coup that ousted him. The organization argues that Bazoum's imprisonment is arbitrary and accuses the junta of violating legal norms.

Niger's current authorities have accused Bazoum of plotting against state security and treason, charges that could carry the death penalty if proven. Although his presidential immunity was lifted by a state court established by the regime, no formal case has been brought against him. International bodies, including ECOWAS and the United Nations, have also called for Bazoum's release.

It's been two years since Niger's former president Mohamed Bouzoum has been detained by the country's military junta, and Human Rights Watch says enough is enough. It's demanding Bouzoum, who has been imprisoned in the presidential palace ever since the coup that toppled his leadership, be released. Human Rights Watch says the detention is arbitrary, accusing the junta of violating the rule of law. Niger's new leaders had said they intended to put Bouzoum on trial, accusing him of plotting against the security and authority of the state, as well as treason. A charge that if found guilty could earn him the death penalty. In June last year, Niger's state court, set up by the regime, lifted Bouzoum's presidential immunity, which would open the path to a trial. To date, however, no case has been brought against the former president. His lawyers have sought the assistance of international bodies, notably ECOWAS, the regional bloc Niger has now left, and the UN. Both have expressed similar concern, demanding Bouzoum be released.
