Utah has implemented a statewide ban on cellphones in classrooms, affecting students from elementary to high school. The Jordan School District, which had already adopted a similar policy, reports that students are more focused and engaged with peers and teachers since the law took effect.

Teachers and administrators note that students who previously withdrew into their devices are now participating more in class discussions. The policy allows students to keep their phones in their backpacks but not use them during class. Consequences for violations include retrieving the phone from the office or requiring a parent to collect it. Overall, the response from students and parents has been positive, with increased face-to-face interaction observed.

How the no cellphone law is working in Utah classrooms

For middle schoolers, high schoolers, and elementary schoolers across Utah, you can't have your cell phone in the classroom with you. And here at Weston Hills Middle School, the students have these things in their backpacks. Amaya Mills may be looking at a screen during her class, but that screen isn't her smartphone. It being away and not on me just makes me forget it's even there. Her phone is tucked away securely in her backpack. For me, it lets me focus on my score. Because over the past few years, the Jordan School District has implemented a no cell phone policy. And so when the phone goes down and they can connect with their peers, sometimes with their teachers, they get so much more out of school. That put the school district ahead of Utah's legislature, which passed a law to ban cell phones in all schools across the state earlier this year. I have kind of the unified perspective on it across all the teachers and also to have the parents on board too. It made it so much easier for the kids to focus. Since going into effect on July 1st, Austin Buxton, the 7th and 8th grade integrative science teacher, says he's seen the impact. And I found that some of the kids that usually withdraw a little bit more, now that they don't have something to withdraw and distract themselves with, they're more encouraged to discuss with other students. But if a phone does make an appearance, there are consequences. The first time they're able to get it at the end of the day from the office. And then second time on out is here at Jordan School District that the parent needs to come and pick it up. Principal Christy Howell says they've had a positive response with students. And if not, it prompts the conversation. So you still are able to have it with you throughout the day, but not out during class. For Mills, she says so far this year in class, she spent more time with people than with her screen. I feel like I'm talking more to my teacher.
