Dan Ives, Global Head of Technology Research at Wedbush Securities, explains how President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods imported into the US will affect Apple.

Apple's current supply chain for iPhone production, predominantly based in China, allows the company to manufacture at scale and keep costs relatively lower. Dan Ives, Global Head of Technology Research at Wedbush Securities, highlights the challenges Apple would face if it tried to move its iPhone production to the United States. He mentions that such a transition would not only require significant investment—estimated at $30 billion—but also take approximately three years to shift just 10% of the supply chain to U.S. soil. 

Due to existing supply chain efficiencies and infrastructure already established in Asia, particularly China, the cost of manufacturing an iPhone within the U.S. could see prices soar to $3,500 per unit. While this price spike would pose considerable challenges for Apple, given current tariff conditions on Chinese goods imported into the United States, transitioning even a fraction of production stateside remains complex and costly.

Ives points out that Apple's manufacturing presence in Asia is vast, with hundreds of sites presently managing production. Taking these operations to the U.S. would require replicating substantial infrastructure, which many view as an insurmountable challenge. Apple's current stock price volatility is influenced, in part, by these trade tensions, and the prospect of re-shoring production raises concerns about potential impacts on the iconic brand's future.

It would take Apple thirty billion dollars and Three years to move just 10% of the supply chain to the u.s 30 billion dollars three years to move 10% to move 10% of the supply chain leaving 90% over even 90% over there and and for Selling myself that that that's traveled throughout Asia for decades the reality of it It's a fictional tale and that's why I think you see what's happened to the stock because no company is More caught up in this tariff front and center in this category 5 storm Then Cupertino and Apple and that's the shame of it I mean you look at we try we just you talk about traveling through Asia and maybe this brings it home We actually looked at a map to say where does Apple make iPhones, you know, we're in Asia I mean, there are hundreds of manufacturing sites in China. We'll throw the map up hundreds of them I mean, it is really stunning. I mean, we're just putting some of them there Hundreds. I mean this is actually about much more as you point out then cheap labor I mean, this is massive infrastructure were you to transport it here and but that's almost an impossibility And that's why the stock is so that because at the end of the day the stocks they're not they're not political They know math and the reality and and when it comes to Apple This would be in my opinion of this if this actually comes through This would change the future of Apple and that's what's so sad to some extent as an American icon You know, you could talk you could have beltway talking points, but there's the reality of it
