Blink and you'll miss them, but these rock formations in Queensland's North Burnet are a link to ancient times. A person just driving by, it just looks like a grey limestone sticking up, and so you could miss it so easily. They're called coral bommies, and they're part of a reef structure you'd normally see off the coast. This is one of the fossil corals from Old Caninda. While the Caninda Reef near Montauk, west of Bundaberg, is no longer alive, researchers hope it holds secrets to help protect the Great Barrier Reef. By understanding how they have reacted to change in their environment through time, it gives us a lot more information about what might happen to the current environments as they change. Artists are helping to bring the ancient reef to life. I think this is really an important part of Montauk's development. Learning from the past. It's part of where we are now, and it's made the country what it is, and it needs to be on it and taken care of. To protect future reefs. The more we know about these reactions, the better prepared we are to understand what we might face in the future.
