Well, as college students all get back to campus, several large universities have found themselves victims of fake reports of shootings in recent days, known as swatting. Now these calls are made to prompt a large police response, typically involving SWAT teams. And it appears CU Boulder was the latest victim, prompting a shelter in place alert for the whole campus this afternoon. Denver 7's Ryan Fish, live at CU Boulder tonight. And Ryan, you heard from several students who understandably were pretty shaken up by this. Yeah, that's right, Shannon, understandably so. Now, CU Boulder has tonight issued an all-clear. They say there was and is no threat to campus. But you can imagine how stressful it was here today, especially if you're a new student, still getting your bearings here, and then suddenly have an alert for a campus-wide shelter in place, or you happen to run into that massive police response we saw here just a few hours ago. Not going towards the library! On just the third day of classes at CU Boulder... My heart was pounding the whole time. ...a campus-wide shelter in place just before 5 p.m. Monday. Cops already had guns drawn when they went in. I mean, we're just completely surrounded by police force. Yeah, it's got to be the whole Boulder PD. Police responding to reports of shots fired at Norland Library. But no sign of injuries or a suspect. Denver 7 heard from students who were inside the library when it all unfolded. We walked down the main hall, and we walked out to all the cops that were sitting in front of the library. And we had no idea what was going on for around 30 minutes. And I heard there were shots fired, but I didn't hear anything. It turns out no one did. Monday evening, CU Boulder confirmed the reports of gunfire are now being investigated as a hoax. Just the latest in a nationwide swatting trend meant to cause chaos and confusion on college campuses. At least three more schools received fake emergency calls on Monday, after several others in the past week. It's not something that should ever be happening, especially with how often it's happening. I think people just take jokes too far. They think it's going to be funny, and they put lives at risk or make people scared about wanting to come here at Boulder. These students tell us the urgent police response was reassuring in case something did happen. But it's still one of those things that I feel like in today's world, where you have to treat everything as if it's a really serious incident. But they also want more detailed emergency alerts. It's just such an anxiety-inducing event, and not having any information just makes it a little bit worse. CU Boulder is saying, also in a statement tonight, that the campus community will continue to see, quote, increased visibility of CUPD officers at residence halls and the library in the coming days.
