The legislation, which passed with a significant majority, affirms Mauritius' claim to the islands, but allows Diego Garcia to remain under a 99-year Anglo-American military lease. 

The agreement includes substantial annual financial payments to Mauritius and the establishment of a trust fund for the Chagosian community. However, the deal does not mandate the resettlement of displaced Chagosians, raising concerns among some islanders about their prospects of returning home.

The long-standing issue of the Chagos Island has taken a significant turn this week, as the British House of Commons voted in favour of a bill supporting the re-transition of the archipelago to Mauritius. On September 9, 2015, the legislation passed with a vote of 330 to 174. This bill affirms Mauritian sovereignty over the islands, while allowing for Diego Garcia to remain under 99-year Anglo-American military lease. In addition, it promises substantial financial support to both the Mauritian government and the Chagosian community. Under the May Agreement, the UK will pay Mauritians an average of $136 million per year to lease back the base for at least 99 years. It establishes a trust fund to benefit the Chagosians and states. However, the deal does not require the residence to be resettled, and some displaced islanders fear it will even be harder to return to their place of birth after Mauritius takes control.
