Medical professionals and the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations have expressed support for increased oversight and improvements to national standards, aiming to ensure the safety of donors and maintain public trust in the organ donation process.

There are currently more than 100,000 people in the U.S. waiting for an organ transplant, but the process for donating an organ could be changing. The Department of Health and Human Services announcing this week a major initiative to begin reforming the organ transplant system after an investigation revealed disturbing practices by a major organ procurement organization. The investigation examined hundreds of cases where organ donation was authorized but not completed. It found 73 cases in which a potential donor still showed signs of consciousness and 28 instances when patients may not have been declared dead when organ procurement was initiated. I'm going to continue to be, and hopefully everybody will continue because it really matters. It's life. But we have to address what's before us and so we can have confidence in the system. 170 million Americans are registered to be organ donors, and Dr. Ankit Bharat says he welcomes more oversight into the organ transplant process. I hope we find opportunities for improvement and make this whole system better because we really have to make sure that all donors feel safe in this process. The Association of Organ Procurement Organizations said it was concerned by some recent incidents that have been highlighted and told Scripps News Group it pledges to work with all stakeholders to improve national standards and uphold the trust placed in this critical system.
