However, Hawthorn rallied in the final moments, with Butler and Choll sealing the victory. The result means Hawthorn will now face the Crows in the next stage of the finals.

The finals moved to Sydney and there was no tomorrow for the Giants and the Hawks. A final rev up from the Hawks skipper and the start was hard but scrappy before Newcombe got the Hawks going. And then Macdonald kept things rolling. And when the Wizard made it three, the Giants had a problem. The soft 50 only compounded issues, the Hawks banging on four unanswered, a Dylan Moore howler gave the Giants a chance and Callaghan took it. The Hawks were dominating in the middle and taking their chances, Deere and Gunston both got in on the act before Macdonald snapped his second to make it a magnificent seven. The Giants needed a spark and it came from a Ruckman, Briggs with a sweet strike. Then Hogan bombed one home and it was game on. The shootout continued when Guinnevin snapped truly, then Macdonald made it three but Darcy Jones stemmed the flow with a ripper from long range. The Hawks weren't letting up though, Gunston marked in gold again and even the PM was impressed and the applause would continue as the veteran pulled another one down. The Giants were starting to struggle, Darcy Jones subbed out with what appears a serious knee injury. The Hawks were all over them, winning hard balls and tackling with might and who else but Jack Guinnevin to provide the hawk ball spice, not once but twice. David Kelly gave the Giants a heartbeat late in the third and then Hogan got them pumping and when Bedford went bang, the final was alive. Hogan loomed as a hero as the scores drew level but then the Hawks rallied again, first Butler then Choll. The Hawks winning their way to a date with the Crows, Nick Butler, 10 News.
