According to attorneys for the alleged victims, Al Fayed subjected staff to abuse over several decades, with allegations of sexual abuse, including rape, being made by more than 20 women in a BBC documentary. Lawyers Dean Armstrong and Gloria Allred, who are representing the victims, stated that Harrods failed to intervene and helped cover up the abuse during Al Fayed's ownership from 1985 to 2010.

In a press conference, Armstrong revealed they are representing 37 women, a number that is expected to grow. Allred detailed further accusations of serial rape, attempted rape, sexual battery, and sexual abuse of minors over 25 years. Furthermore, it is claimed that Al Fayed forced women to undergo medical screenings and threatened them with consequences if they complained. Al Fayed, who consistently denied the allegations, died in 2023 at the age of 94.

Harrods issued an apology expressing their dismay at the allegations. Lawyers have announced their intention to pursue a civil case against Harrods, citing the store's collective corporate responsibility for the actions that occurred under Al Fayed's leadership.

Harrods issued an apology on Thursday and said it was, quote, utterly appalled by the allegations. Allred said they included serial rape, attempted rape, sexual battery and sexual abuse of minors carried out over 25 years. Several media organizations had exposed allegations of sexual abuse against Al-Fayed in the past, including in 1995, 1997 and 2017. Lawyers on Friday said they would pursue a civil case against Harrods because of its, quote, collective corporate responsibility for what happened.
