Artists in Gulfport, Florida, have responded to the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton by compiling their experiences into a book titled "Gulfport Rising" and an accompanying art exhibit, "After the Storm." The project features paintings, photographs, essays, and poems contributed by community members, aiming to both inform outsiders and help locals heal from the storms' impact.

The exhibit, currently on display at the Hickman Theater through December 24th, showcases works that memorialize damaged landmarks and demolished homes. Organizers are also considering donating part of the book's proceeds to local charities, with more information available at tampabay28.com.

This is Robert Boyd in Gulfport. Well, it's been more than a year since Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated the Gulfport community, but artists here have not forgotten bringing to life the paintings, photos, essays and poems captured during the storms in a new book and art exhibit. My husband and I were displaced after Helene. I've always been a writer and writing has been what has helped me make sense of the world, and I thought maybe this would not only inform people who hadn't been through the experience, but maybe provide some healing for those who did. So Lynn Taylor put out a call to the community to share photos, artwork and written submissions pertaining to the storms, and she compiled them all into one book. Gulfport rising every entry, you know, was just told the story of our town. Then Gulfport artist and fellow hurricane victim Paula Roy had the idea. Why not turn the artwork from the book into an actual art exhibit called after the storm? Currently on display at the Hickman Theater, trying to find those pieces of beauty in. Devastation. Paula is especially fond of her painting of the Gulfport Pier. The landing for the pier had fallen into the water in this beautiful fluorescent green moss started growing on it and I came by and thought I need to paint that fellow artist Elena Joy decided to focus her time and creativity on the homes that had to be demolished. There's something about it that really captures the human experience, you know, in the whole array of emotions, which I think is important. It's archival like those houses don't exist anymore, so it's just kind of a neat way to pay homage to them. The exhibit after the storm runs through December 24th.
