After decades of scouring the bottom of Lake Michigan, searchers have finally found the wreckage of a “ghost ship” that sank during a ferocious storm almost 140 years ago off the Wisconsin coastline.

The F. J. King schooner, which sank off the coast of Baileys Harbor in Lake Michigan nearly 140 years ago, has been discovered by the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association. The ship, once the subject of local stories and unconfirmed sightings, was found intact during an educational tour.

The discovery surprised those involved, as previous attempts to locate the wreck had been unsuccessful. The ship's remains, including its hatches, were observed to be in good condition, confirming the vessel's identity and ending years of speculation about its fate.
