It no longer exists as we knew it. And nostalgia won't change that. But there is one notable exception. The growing cooperation between the Trump administration and Germany's far-right AFD was on full display at a gala hosted by the New York Young Republican Club. AFD politician Markus Frohnmaier was honored for his work in what organizers call a hostile political environment in Germany. At home, parts of his party are monitored as extremists. Here in New York, he is welcomed, alongside calls to tear down Germany's political firewall. A consensus among Germany's main political parties that the far-right must never be allowed in government again. A fantastic evening. The call to tear down the firewall resonated here. Our US allies, during the meetings I've had over the last two days, recognized the problem in Germany. And there's a strong willingness to change course. A change of course Frohnmaier hopes to pursue in his own political future. With elections coming up in his home state. The US is one of our most important, if not the most important trading partners, especially for my home state of Baden-Württemberg. I want to be the next state premier there, and that's only possible if we work with our partners. We of course don't only want to hear from Markus Frohnmaier how he feels about being here, but also from members of the Young Republican Party, how they feel about this new bond between their party and the AFD. Good evening. Could I ask you a quick question? My name is Ines Bohler, I'm with Deutsche Welle, this is Germany's international broadcaster. What do you make of the new connection between the AFD? Are you not allowed to talk? Those who were willing to speak explained why they believe the relationship with the AFD is deepening. I personally think that they stand on more traditional values, both of them, you know, anti-immigration, family rights, and the AFD is also against the Ukraine war, I personally think, so maybe this interlinked, and they get closer because of that. We believe in traditional values here. We want the foreigners out, whether that's America or Europe. We're tired of being replaced. We want to preserve the culture and the traditions that we've built, and I don't know why people have a problem with that. The great replacement theory that has soared in popularity among the far right in Europe and the US holds that political elites are deliberately introducing non-white migrants into Europe to supplant the white race. The AFD party members attending the gala praised their shared goals in what they see as a growing partnership with the Trump administration. The AFD in Germany and Trump and the MAGA movement in the United States, this is part of a global turning point. We can see that the current US government is very committed to freedom and also to protecting the rights of citizens, and this is also very important in Germany because freedom of expression is massively threatened in Germany. For those hoping this alliance may be short-lived, the mood here suggests otherwise. I look forward to maintaining this relationship over time. I think that even past Trump's term, even past his successor, I think we'll keep this strong relationship because we want to help them in whatever ways we can.
