The new legislation provides police with advanced technology, such as electromagnetic pulses and GPS jamming, to counter drone threats. There are also plans to amend aviation security laws to enable the army to shoot down drones in emergencies. However, questions remain about the practicality of maintaining constant readiness across thousands of critical sites, and how best to coordinate rapid responses. The establishment of a Drone Defense Center aims to improve information sharing and response times to drone incidents.

Thousands of passengers stranded at Munich airport last week. The cause? Drones spotted near the runway. We have a suspicion that a significant portion of it is probably controlled from Russia. But we are investigating the matter. And regardless of where it comes from, it is a serious threat to our security. The latest in a wave of drone incursions has left Germany scrambling to figure out how to stop them. And that is why we need to detect, defend against and intercept drones. Detecting, defending against and intercepting naturally also includes shooting them down. Part of the problem is agreeing who is responsible, state or federal police. And do they even have the kit needed to keep pace with rapidly developing drone technology? And there is also the question about how to stop them. Some politicians want them to be shot down, but others warn of dangers to the public. Now the federal police are being given more power with the modernization of policing legislation. This gives the federal police the opportunity to use state-of-the-art technology to counter drone threats. For example with electromagnetic pulses, jamming, GPS interference and physical intervention. In other words, intercepting and shooting down drones will be regulated and made possible by the federal police in the future. There are also plans to change aviation security laws. This would make it easier for the army to shoot down drones in case of emergency. But once the legal situation has been resolved, would Germany even be capable of protecting itself against drones? How can the German armed forces be called upon, contacted and sent over with equipment and trained personnel 24-7 as part of administrative assistance? We currently have 1,000 critical infrastructure operators with 2,000 critical facilities in Germany. You would have to have everyone on standby 24-7 at many thousands of locations with all the equipment ready. That doesn't make sense logically. With the Drone Defense Center, Germany is planning to pool information on drone sightings like those in Munich. Being able to respond faster and in a more coordinated way remains the biggest challenge.
