Franziska Brandner, co-chair of Germany's Green party, has criticized the German government's lack of response to EU proposals regarding the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. She called for individual sanctions against certain Israeli officials and violent settlers, as well as an export stop for weapons that could be used in violation of international law. Brandner also suggested that parts of the EU Association Agreement with Israel could be suspended, while maintaining exchanges with Israeli civil society and academia. She emphasized the importance of Germany enabling European action on the issue, rather than leaving the initiative to other international actors.

Franziska Brandt, the co-leader of the Greens, is with me now. Mrs. Brandt, it was rather striking that neither the leader of the opposition nor the Chancellor mentioned the issue of Gaza. Why do you think it was pretty much missing in this debate today? It is obvious that the German government needs to be able to have a position that allows a European action on Israel, Gaza, on the entire region. And I think it's very correct if the EU High Representative asked the German government either to support their proposals or to come up with their own. And what is no longer acceptable is that there is no answer from Berlin to Brussels when it comes to this important issue. In fact, Germany is one of the odd ones out. There's only less than a handful of countries that oppose taking action. That could also mean an implication on trade. What is the proposal that the Greens are making? What step would you like to see the government take? We really want to see individual sanctions against members like Ben-Gurion and Smotric of the Israeli government who are pushing for the crimes that are happening not just in Gaza but also in the West Bank. We want individual sanctions against violent settlers in the West Bank. And we also call for an export stop for those weapons that can illegally be employed in Gaza that do break the international law. And we think there are parts of the EU Association Agreement that can be put on a hold, not the entire agreement, but parts of it. For us, it's important to save the exchanges with civil society, with the scientific community in Israel. That should not be stopped. There's a court case pending before the International Criminal Court accusing Israel of genocide. There are other actors accusing Israel of meeting several conditions that could amount to genocide. What does that mean for the debate here in Germany? I think we should not debate about the words. We should debate about what we should do to stop the crimes that are obviously happening today, yesterday, the day before, and unfortunately probably also tomorrow in Gaza. And that is what we should focus on. And I think in Germany, we really also need to make sure that the German government is allowing Europe to be active, because otherwise we leave all the discussion and all the action to President Trump of the US, which I think is not acting in our interest.
