Displaced families report sleeping in the open due to the high cost of tents and toilets, while food and clean water are in short supply. Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and the spread of disease have made conditions increasingly difficult, prompting some families to return to Gaza City despite ongoing airstrikes. The situation in al-Mawasi highlights the severe humanitarian challenges faced by those displaced by the conflict.

Israel's war on Gaza City is expanding by the minute. Nearly a million Palestinians call Gaza City home. Families are being driven south, forced to leave everything behind in search of safety. Their destination, al-Mawasi, a so-called safe zone that offers anything but safety. According to Gaza's government media office, 68,000 people have fled to al-Mawasi. But what awaits them here is nothing humanitarian at all. In al-Mawasi, tents cost up to $1,000, toilets $400. Prices families cannot afford, leaving many stranded with no shelter at all. I fled northern Gaza yesterday as mortar shells rained down. We arrived here at midnight, only to find no water, no toilets, nothing. Families are sleeping in the open. The situation is extremely dire. Here, mornings begin with a battle for food and water. Women, children and elderly line up for long hours to fill a few gallons of water and food bowels. Israel promised to bring infrastructure here. Instead, families live beside piles of rotting garbage and pools of sewage. We are facing a severe shortage of clean water for drinking and washing. Food is scarce and inside these tents, people are hungry and malnourished. Winter is approaching and we urgently need new tents. On top of that, this area cannot handle more displaced families. These unbearable conditions have driven 20,000 families back to Gaza City. They are forced to choose between death from airstrikes or slow suffering in al-Mawasi. Sewage water runs near my tent, sometimes mixed with animal waste. Diseases are spreading, mosquitoes are everywhere. We can't sleep because of them. What are we supposed to do? For families in Gaza City, every evacuation order pushes families further south and every move makes them more vulnerable than before. This coastal, sandy wasteland was never built to shelter life, but today it's where Israel is forcing Palestinians to gather. A move seen by many here as the first step in driving them out of Gaza altogether.
