Seven-year-old Shaza Hamdan is among the new amputees, having lost her leg due to shelling. As war continues to devastate Gaza, thousands of new amputees need prosthetics. That's according to the UN Humanitarian Agency OCHA last month, but the International Committee of the Red Cross, or ICRC, said it has been a challenge to get artificial limbs into the Gaza Strip. Among the new amputees is seven-year-old Shaza Hamdan. I was playing at home and my father told me, come on, let's go out for a walk. We went out and the shelling started falling on us like rain. I got a shell on my leg and my father got a shell on his shoulder. Hamdan underwent surgery twice, and the doctor had to perform further amputation on the injured leg, because of inflammation. Before the injury, I was calm and very good. I used to play and do everything. I stopped shopping for my siblings and do anything for anyone. I started walking with crutches, just like everyone else. Since the war between Hamas and Israel began in 2023, many have suffered injuries that will change their lives. But amid an Israeli military campaign that has left the medical system barely able to function, estimates for how many Palestinians have lost limbs vary. Ahmed Moussa runs the physical rehabilitation program in Gaza for the ICRC. He said at least 3,000 people had been registered in their program, of whom 1,800 have amputations. The 21-year-old hoped to become a teacher, but the injury has thrown all her plans into doubt. I always say I wish I could go back to my normal life like before, walk, live my life and complete my studies. I wish I could get a prosthetic limb and go back to my working life and so on. That day I lost more than just my leg, she said. My dreams vanished.
