A Palestinian businessman has opened a new tailor workshop in Khan Younis, Gaza, aiming to provide jobs for displaced people and revitalize the local economy. The workshop's creation comes after nine months of Israeli bombardment that caused widespread destruction, including the demolishment of businessman Abu Samer Shat's previous factory in Rafah.

Despite the devastation, Shat managed to retrieve machinery, fabric, and other materials from the rubble to start the new workshop. This initiative is crucial as nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million residents have lost their homes since the Israeli military campaign, which began as a response to an attack by Hamas. Many people are currently living in tents or shelters and are struggling to afford basic necessities.

Shat estimates his financial losses due to the war to be around $6 million. With Israel permitting only limited humanitarian supplies, there is a significant shortage of ordinary goods such as clothing. Tailor Sami Hassouna, who travels about an hour each way to work at the workshop, highlights the need for a continuous supply of new raw materials, as the tailors are currently making do with salvaged ones.

From the strikes, I retrieved the material, the fabric, thread, and all the material for the work. I opened this factory, and I fixed it. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants have lost their homes since the Israeli military campaign launched in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas. Many people are living in tents or shelters, and struggling to afford food and goods among the ruins. Shat estimates his losses due to the war are around $6 million. And with Israel only allowing in some humanitarian supplies, ordinary goods such as clothes are in short supply. Tailor Sami Hassouna travels about an hour each way to get to work. We got the opportunity to work in our field of work, he says, while adding, we need continuity, and this needs the entry of new raw material. Hassouna says the tailors are working with salvaged materials for now, but he worries how long that can last.
