Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has declassified additional materials regarding the intelligence community's assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The documents include a report drafted by Republican staff of the House Intelligence Committee, focusing on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin aimed to help then-candidate Donald Trump win the election.

The release contains sensitive information from a CIA human source in Russia and has been criticized by former intelligence officials, who argue it could hinder future intelligence operations. The Justice Department has formed a strike force to assess the claims publicized by Gabbard, but so far, no evidence has emerged to substantiate allegations of treason or government overthrow.

Meanwhile, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard declassified additional materials on the intelligence community's assessment of Russia's actions in the 2016 election. At a White House press briefing, Gabbard claimed the materials show Obama administration officials manufactured information to undermine then-presidential candidate Donald Trump. So I want to bring in CBS News intelligence and national security reporter Olivia Gazez. Olivia, thank you for your time today. What are the details in these new documents? Anything new from them? Sure, Mugo. So the document that was released yesterday was a years-old report drafted by the Republican staff of the House Intelligence Committee, where now-FBI Director Kash Patel was then a lead staffer at the time. Like other releases from Gabbard so far, it focuses on this assessment from the intelligence community of Russia's actions during the election that was publicly released in January of 2017, and specifically on this question of whether President Putin aspired to help then-candidate Trump win. So it is retreading the same territory as several of these other extensive reviews that have happened since have done. The Bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee report, the Mueller report, the Durham report, and even more recently, a tradecraft review that the CIA under John Ratcliffe released just a few weeks ago in early July. The difference with this report that Gabbard put out yesterday is that it contains highly sensitive, previously classified information from a human source that CIA had in Russia close to Putin, who was providing the U.S. government information about Putin's plans and intentions. And the report argued that analysts here may not have fully taken into account this human source's motivations, its potential bias. But again, multiple reviews, including the CIA's own, looked into it and found the analysis of that information to be sound. And so, Mugo, a credible human source with proximity to a world leader in an adversarial country is pretty much the crown jewel of intelligence collection, which is why you've heard former intelligence officials, the Democratic heads of the intelligence committees immediately criticizing this release, saying that it's going to make it that much harder for U.S. intelligence agencies to run and recruit spies in hard-target countries like Russia. So that was their main criticism of the release that came out yesterday. Yeah, that's a very important point as well. So the Justice Department announced the formation of a strike force to assess the claims publicized by Director Gabbard. What could come out of all that? Yeah, it is hard to say anything for certain other than this is now in the hands of the investigators at the DOJ and, of course, Attorney General Pam Bondi. It's also not clear whether there are more declassifications to come. President Trump did say yesterday that the DNI had thousands of more documents. But so far, Mugo, nothing that we have seen seems to be remotely close to substantiating the very serious allegations of treason, the crime of attempting to overthrow the government that the president and others have been making.
