Candace Owens, a right-wing commentator and influencer from the United States, has been spreading theories online that Brigitte Macron is a man. The French presidential couple has now taken her to court for defamation.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte have initiated a defamation lawsuit against American right-wing commentator Candace Owens. The lawsuit, filed in a Delaware court, alleges that Owens refused to retract statements after three formal requests and continued to promote unsubstantiated theories about the couple, including claims of incest and involvement in a CIA mind-control program.

These allegations were disseminated through an eight-part podcast series and have gained traction among conspiracy theorists and far-right groups. Brigitte Macron has also pursued legal action in France against individuals spreading similar claims, with mixed results in French courts.

The Macrons have had enough. France's presidential couple has sued right-wing American commentator Candace Owens for defamation. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in a Delaware court after the French couple said that they had demanded three times that Owens retract her statements. The right-wing influencer however refused to do so, according to the lawsuit, and continued to spread her theories without proof. These also included alleging that the couple were related and committed incest, as well as President Macron being chosen for a mind-control program operated by the CIA. The theories that Owens spread, notably through an eight-part podcast series, have found echo in the realm of conspiracy theorists, Covid-septics and the far-right. Brigitte Macron recently sued two French women spreading similar theories for libel. Although initially both were found guilty, a Paris court overturned the decision. Madame Macron is set to appeal.
