Nuclear technology expert Emmanuelle Gallichet said a single day of reactor shutdown amounts to more than $1 million in losses for the energy provider. She says with climate change, similar situations could arise more often. It's clear that with global warming, there could indeed be a greater profusion of jellyfish in rather cold seas. And then there's also algae, we've seen that too. It will cause the same problem as jellyfish if we have profusions of algae due to warmer seas. So indeed in the future, it's clear that if we see that this happens too often, EDF will take measures to protect its sites by the sea. All four reactors are planned to have returned to service on Friday, EDF data showed.
