Paul Derry has launched a civil lawsuit over the abuse he says he suffered while working as an underage operative in the Maritimes.

Paul Derry, who worked as an undercover agent for the RCMP in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, is suing the RCMP and the federal government. His undercover work led to numerous convictions, including against Hells Angels members, and resulted in his placement in the witness protection program until 2010. Derry says he continues to need protection from those he helped convict and is concerned about a proposal to move his lawsuit from federal court to New Brunswick Provincial Court, a location he considers unsafe due to his history.

Derry's lawsuit seeks damages, but he emphasizes that his case is about principle rather than money. He questions whether adequate protection will be provided if he is required to attend court in New Brunswick. The RCMP has declined to comment on the case, citing ongoing legal proceedings.

Evidence that Paul Derry collected in his work as an undercover agent in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick led to dozens of convictions including against Hells Angels hitmen. The work also landed him in the witness protection program where he was protected until 2010. He says he still needs protection from some of the people he helped put in jail so he was surprised when government lawyers proposed that his lawsuit be transferred from federal court where it was filed to New Brunswick Provincial Court in Moncton. 2019 it was deemed a threat area to me by the RCMP and now they're asking me to go back there it's quite obvious that I testified against the Hells Angels in in Halifax two hours away they know that I've that I did most of my work in Moncton I did it for them so why they would ever think that New Brunswick is the right venue when the federal court could do it I you know I mean that's a legal thing I don't I don't get it but it seems it seems crazy it seems it seems kind of ludicrous to me anytime I went to the Maritimes I was delivered into the hands of a nerd team emergency response team members at the very least if we didn't have the whole obviously the whole team would have been in and around corp hearings but I still was always protected so I don't I don't know I mean are they going to supply protection for me every time I have to go down and look at discovery documents and all that kind of stuff and all the other stuff that comes with all the legal wrangling that goes on while his lawsuit is asking for damages he says it's not about the money I understand the legal system enough to know that it's it never really gets your money and it really drains you a lot but I do think you know my psychologist asked me do you think the principle is worth the cost and it was one of the deciding factors I came to the conclusion that yes the principle is worth the cost these days when he's not waging a court battle dairy is a consultant on police issues the RCMP declined to comment on this case because the matter is now before the courts Blair Rhodes CBC News Halifax
