Many South African children have no access to the sport. A former South African cricket coach has taken on a mission to build cricket facilities in schools across Cape Town.

In Kyaleetsha, South Africa, former national cricket player and coach Gary Kirsten has founded Catch Trust, an initiative that has built a full-size cricket pitch and indoor training facility for local children. These facilities provide opportunities for both boys and girls, such as the team from Chris Honey Secondary School, to engage in cricket and benefit from structured programs in a community where basic sports infrastructure is often lacking.

Catch Trust's work extends beyond cricket, offering coach education, outreach programs, and sessions on topics like women's health and financial literacy. The initiative aims to give young people a sense of purpose and identity. Plans are underway to bring the girls' team to London for the Women's World Cup, exposing them to international competition and role models.

But in the heart of Kyaleetsha, the girls from Chris Honey Secondary School take on the boys. Since this pitch was built, cricket has taken root in one of the country's most unlikely places. Last week we were having a game against boys and they won. So yeah, they are our shining boys at times. For Suwila, the under-19s captain, cricket has become more than a game. She lives in a community plagued by crime and limited prospects. But the sport is teaching her how to face life's bigger challenges. Being tough, it's something that can help me to analyse some situations that are more tougher than playing cricket. Her mother has seen the transformation firsthand. Cricket helped me to raise her as a single mother. I am thankful to the coaches, to help my daughter, she's here now because of that cricket. I am a proud mother. The change was made possible by Catch Trust, an initiative founded by former national player and coach Gary Kirsten. It not only built the full-size pitch, but an indoor training facility which is used for more than just sport. The initial vision was to use it specifically for cricket, but it's actually much more involved than that. We run coach education sessions here, we do all sorts of outreach programs in the centre here, women's health, financial literacy. When these kids leave class at 2.30, 3 o'clock in the afternoon, many of them just walk home and they're left to their own devices. But to have a structured program in place, I think is crucial to them, it gives many of them a sense of identity and purpose in the afternoons. So once you give them that access, they thrive. Next year, Catch Trust will bring Samila and her team from Kylatia to London for the Women's World Cup. They'll play against top competition and watch their sporting idols show them what's possible.
