Florida has a new massive disaster logistics hub to speed storm relief statewide-stocking food, water and generators for disaster victims across the state.

Florida has established a new central operations and coordination office aimed at improving disaster readiness across the state. The facility, located in Polk County, features a 400,000 square foot warehouse stocked with three million gallons of water, three million shelf-stable meals, 100,000 tarps, and additional emergency supplies. It also includes space for over 300 personnel, sleeping quarters for 100 people, and 400 trailers to facilitate rapid deployment.

Officials highlighted the importance of individual household preparedness, noting that while the state is well-stocked, residents should not rely solely on government resources. The new hub is designed to enable faster distribution of aid following disasters, addressing previous delays experienced during events like Hurricane Ian, which affected most of Florida's counties.

The state chose Polk County because it's smack dab in the center of this state. It was a key part of the designing of this warehouse. It allows the crews, the tractors and the trailers to quickly disperse to all parts of florida after a disaster strikes. But officials tell us having a household plan matters to where we maybe get about a C, maybe a C minus is an individual preparedness. I think a lot of people have started to depend on the government to basically just do it for them. Hurricane Ian affected 47 out of 67 counties in the state of florida. While we had enough for that initial push of about the first 30, 36 hours statewide, we had to depend on contracts to bring in that other equipment and that stuff was, you know, 24 36 70 48 hours behind.
