Powell, who has spent nine years umpiring in the minor leagues and major league spring training, was called up to cover a doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. Her selection follows a growing trend of women breaking barriers in professional sports, with MLB now joining the NBA and NFL in having female referees at the highest level. And when a fifth umpire was needed to cover this Saturday's double header between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins, Powell was the one who was called up. Obviously Kim Eng was the general manager of the Miami Marlins, you know, so the more women you see in all different roles in the game, I think you're just going to start to see more milestones being broken. Major League Baseball will be the third of the big four American pro sports to have female referees at the highest level behind the NBA and the NFL years later. Violet Palmer broke basketball's gender barrier in 1997. I mean, my stomach was in knots, but I can tell you this, as soon as the ball went up and the game started, I was just another referee.
